The Margherita Theatre, built on the sea
A historic theater built on the seafront in Bari: discover the Teatro Margherita

The Margherita Theatre Bari 's most characteristic and symbolic monuments .
Visible from afar both from the seafront and along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II (the very city center), the theatre rests its foundations directly on the sea of Bari .
Its history is very fascinating: it began in 1910, coinciding with the birth of the Petruzzelli Theatre Bari 's main theatre ), with a structure entirely made of wood which, however, just a year later, was destroyed by a fire whose causes remain unknown to this day.
The reconstruction took place in 1914, this time in reinforced concrete, but with its foundations still in the sea, thus going down in history not only for being the first reinforced concrete structure built in Bari but above all for being the only building in all of Europe built on stilts.
The Margherita Theatre , like other historical monuments in Bari, was severely damaged by the bombings and the events of the World War; however, the structure was restored and within a short time it was converted into the “Margherita Cinema” .
After several years of screening films, however, partly due to the crisis in the cinema industry, the theatre closed and was abandoned.
Only a recovery and restoration plan for the theatre, begun around the 2000s, brought this important monument back to its rightful place; today the Margherita Theatre national and international importance .
