Between sea and history: Porto Ghiacciolo
When nature and history intersect: the fantastic cove at the foot of an ancient Abbey in Monopoli
Nature, as we know, always gives us indescribable and indescribable emotions, but when history and nature intersect, a fascinating place is born!
A prime example is this beach in Monopoli , in the province of Bari (about a half-hour drive) , nicknamed Porto Ghiacciolo .
This cove, among the many wonderful beaches in Monopoli , is not very large, but it has two characteristics that make it particularly special: first, its clear sea , which is quite cold compared to other beaches (hence the name Porto Ghiacciolo, even though the water temperature is pleasant) , but above all, its location, since this crystalline sea rises at the foot of an ancient structure, the Abbey of Santo Stefano (or Castello di Santo Stefano), a building constructed in 1086 and which in the Middle Ages was responsible for defending the coast of the ancient city of Monopoli.
In light of the above, this place is now an undisputed destination for many locals and tourists who want to spend an unusual day in a particularly beautiful and evocative setting. The color and clarity of the water, combined with the charming castle located at the edge of the beach , create a unique and likely unrepeatable atmosphere.

However, there's also plenty of healthy fun to be had; Porto Ghiacciolo boasts a small beach club located on the opposite side of the ancient building, where you can rent sun loungers or enjoy delicious drinks and food Apulian snacks ) while listening to lively background music.
The only drawback of this splendid corner of the Monopoli coast is that, being so small, it's extremely difficult to find a spot. Therefore, if you decide to visit this beach , we recommend getting to the beach as early as possible to take advantage of the free area or the section reserved for the beach club (even the sun loungers at the club club sell out quickly) .
Another point of interest, especially for adventurers , concerns the historic fortress of Porto Ghiacciolo and the surrounding area; if you venture from the sea towards the Abbey, you'll find small, evocative caves where you can breathe in the magical air of this place and perhaps take a souvenir photo. So if you're in the Monopoli , or simply want to head from Bari to this fantastic location, Porto Ghiacciolo is one of those places that will remain in your memory, both for its crystal-clear sea and for this elegant historic structure on the coast.
What do you say, is this beach worth your attention?
I'd say so.
