You'll soon find out what you need, but first, a premise. Puglia , as a whole, is a region waiting to be discovered and experienced from north to south, but as you might have imagined, four days is truly too short, so what you'll find on this page is intended to give you some tips so you can experience the beating heart of Puglia in the shortest possible time, starting right from the capital city of Puglia, Bari. Why Bari, you might be wondering? Probably because, in addition to being a large and beautiful city, it is also well connected by highway, airport, port, and train station. Furthermore, thanks to its geographical position (Bari is located in the center of Puglia), it is possible to quickly reach some of the region's most typical and beautiful places, such as Polignano a Mare , Alberobello , Monopoli , Castellana Grotte (just to name a few) , but there are many others, wonderful and unmissable.
It goes without saying that, for greater convenience, renting a car , so as to be free of travel constraints and enjoy your weekend in Puglia .
So, with that in mind, here's a suggestion that will only reinforce what we've said above: choosing a base like Bari (which you'll love) , then exploring the surrounding areas and returning home completely satisfied with your weekend in Puglia . A suggested itinerary that's both feasible and interesting, to satisfy your expectations and your relentless curiosity about this magnificent region.
DAY 1
Discovering Bari, the seafront and old Bari
Let's say your trip begins mid-day on a Thursday , you'd have the opportunity to immediately experience the capital of Puglia . A stroll along the seafront (perhaps with a beautiful sunset) , a visit to Bari's most famous shopping streets old town , with its narrow streets, the Basilica of San Nicola , the Swabian Castle, museums, and many charming little restaurants where you can savor typical Bari dishes , both seafood and meat. Of course, Bari isn't just this, as it also boasts theaters, historic buildings, and many other fascinating places and attractions, but it would be very difficult to visit anything else in half a day.
DAY 2
towards the Trulli of Alberobello and the houses of Locorotondo
Friday is all about villages with the typical Apulian style admired throughout the world. We're talking about the capital of the Trulli, Alberobello , and one of the "most beautiful villages in Italy," Locorotondo ; these two towns are extremely close to each other (just 12 minutes by car) and are both approximately 40 minutes from Bari . Two places that are absolutely worth visiting and, thanks to their location, can be done in the same day. A tip? Alberobello in the morning (with lunch in one of the trattorias in the village) and in the afternoon Locorotondo for a stroll among the characteristic " Cummerse ," the sloping roofs that characterize the houses of this fantastic historic center .
DAY 3:
Morning in Monopoli, ice cream in Polignano a Mare, and evening in Torre a Mare
If Thursday is dedicated to the villages of Puglia's hinterland, how could you not visit the splendid ones on the coast? Here's an idea for spending your weekend in some highly sought-after places for their beauty and nightlife; we're talking, above all, about Monopoli and Polignano a Mare , two towns not far from Bari that will allow you to experience a unique and unforgettable day. The idea could be to go to Monopoli to enjoy the scent of the sea and the splendid alleys of the old town , with its restaurants and charming bars, while in the afternoon, heading towards Bari, you could stop in Polignano a Mare to enjoy a delicious ice cream, perhaps on the cliff overlooking the crystal-clear water or at the foot of the statue of Domenico Modugno singing "nel blu dipinto di blu" . Finally, to conclude this splendid Saturday evening, a stop in Torre a Mare (still on the way back to Bari) for a tasty pizza and a stroll along the pier of this charming Bari neighborhood .
DAY 4
Half day in Trani and return to base
If the southern part of Bari and its province has enthralled you, now it's time for the northern part. Trani isn't the only noteworthy city north of Bari , but it's definitely a must-see if you're planning a trip to this area. Elegant, bustling with shops, and above all vibrant, Trani boasts a particularly vibrant and surprising atmosphere, both day and night. This makes it a worthwhile destination to spend half a day there, perhaps even with a seafood lunch. This will truly round out your four days in Puglia , and you'll return to your starting point not only with a big smile on your face, but also eager to plan your next visit on a possible return trip to Puglia.
