The hidden charm of the rock church of Santa Candida
A rock church immersed in the silence of the Bari hills, witness to a Middle Ages of faith and mystery.

The Basilica of Santa Candida is a place where history, religion, and mystery intertwine, offering tourists an unforgettable experience and a chance to discover a hidden yet fascinating corner of the city. Bari, in fact, is a city rich in history and culture, preserving within it numerous vestiges of the past.
Among these, one of the most fascinating and mysterious is the Rupestrian Basilica of Santa Candida , a true hidden treasure in the heart of the city. This church, dating back to the 10th-11th century , is one of the largest rock churches in Puglia and an extraordinary example of medieval sacred art. Located a few steps from the Poggiofranco , along the right flank of Lama Picone , the basilica is immersed in a unique natural setting, carved into the calcarenite rock, a sedimentary rock formed over millennia by the sea that once invaded the territory.
The basilica is set in a historical context rich in significance. During the Byzantine period, the area was populated by a community of diverse ethnic origins, which contributed to the spread of the Christian faith in the region. The surrounding area was home to other hypogea and a chora , a rural settlement that developed next to the church. This site still represents a symbol of the religious identity of medieval Bari and a testament to the presence of Eastern monks in the area.
History and mystery of the frescoes
Although the basilica is now aniconic , the side walls were once decorated with frescoes depicting sacred and historical scenes. These frescoes, unfortunately lost or deteriorated over time, are evidenced by the remnants of paintings along the architraves of the nave. In the apse one can still admire Latin inscriptions commemorating the saints venerated by the local community: Saint Cecilia , Saint Helena , Saint Thomas , Saint , Saint Erasmus , Saint Bartholomew , and, of course, Saint Candida . The presence of these saints highlights the religious importance of the church and its connection to the Byzantine Christian tradition.
Once upon a time there was the monastery
Adjacent to the church was a monastery that housed monastic cells used by the monks for prayer and daily life. Unfortunately, much of this structure was destroyed during excavation work for the expansion of the Bari ring road . This led to the loss of an important part of this site's history. Despite this, the basilica continues to retain its charm and historical importance.
